Please Read First: About this blog
Who I am:
I am an Advertising student at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX. I went into the Advertising program in 2002 with the hopes of expressing my creativity and learning effective design skills. Little did I know that during my quest for knowledge I would learn to become disgusted with the industry. This later made me decide take on the challenge of an advertising (and media) revolution. I want to re-invent advertising; something predecessors such as Bill Bernbauch, David Ogilvy, Rosser Reeves and Leo Burnett accomplished. The difference? I am a woman.
The Concept:
In Spring 2006 I took Media Literacy at Collin County Community College. What did I learn? I learned “The Big 5″ control everything in the media. Every magazine, book, website, news outlet, radio station, movie and T.V. show that you watch is somehow connected to one of five companies. At current those companies are Viacom, News Corp, Bertelsmann, AOL/Time Warner and Disney. Everything you see, watch or read is influenced by one of these companies. This is no big secret. No one has tried to hide it.
So how does this effect you?
Check ten websites/magazines/T.V. shows/favorite movies/music labels etc that you love. Unless they are “independent” nine times out of 10 they lead back to one of these companies. Do these companies have political views? Of course. Do their presidents and CEOs have certain things they want their consumers to see and not see? Absolutely. Are you persuaded by the outlets that you choose- or that choose you? More then you would ever believe.
So how does this effect me?
Why did this make me question my “advertising existence?”
Essentially, I’m too honest for advertising. I’m a creative at heart. I’m conceptual for creativity’s sake. What I’m not is a person who is going to throw a photo shopped healthy-size-nine woman on an ad, present her as a size zero (with no flaws) and teach small girls to mirror my ad (or they will never be married and die a lonely, old woman.) I will not teach boys that they must be tough and play with guns to be a man or that buying teeth whitener will make someone want to kiss them. I won’t false advertise to a world that relies on the media to shape their social stigmas. I won’t add to the fear that’s already instilled in America. I won’t be someone who isn’t me. (And you shouldn’t accept it.) After all, aren’t there more creative ways to reach people anyway?
In Conclusion:
I, in no way want you to stop looking for information here. These are my opinions. The only thing I’m right about is the media is influencing Americans in an unhealthy and unprecedented way.
Seek information, ask questions, get answers but God forbid do NOT let the media scare you or shape your perceptions. Your world is relative to your own life experiences, not what the media tells you they are.
Disclaimer:
All opinions and perceptions on this blog are MY OWN. My views do NOT reflect the views of any other person I might refer to, be it past professors or long dead idols. If and when I refer to these people, I’m merely referencing them as an influence in my life or attributing a quote. No person’s full name will ever be used for any reason (unless they are a media topic.)
